The New Jersey Commanders of the Rite (NJCOTR) is a distinguished organization operating under the authority of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation (NJCOD), Prince Hall Affiliation, Northern Jurisdiction. Comprised of dedicated Scottish Rite leaders, the NJCOTR exists to promote fellowship, leadership, education, mentorship, charitable service, and support for the programs and objectives of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

 

Origins of the Commanders of the Rite

 

The origin of the Commanders of the Rite is generally credited to Sovereign Grand Commander John G. Lewis, Jr., 33°, of the Orient of Louisiana, who served as the 6th Sovereign Grand Commander of the United Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction, Prince Hall Affiliation, from 1961 to 1979. Recognizing the value of experienced Scottish Rite leaders working collectively for the advancement of the Rite, he envisioned an organization composed of accomplished 33° Masons who would assist Consistories, educate Sublime Princes, strengthen Scottish Rite Masonry, and support the mission of the United Supreme Council.

 

To bring this vision to fruition, Sovereign Grand Commander Lewis directed Deputies throughout the various Orients to organize Commanders of the Rite bodies within their respective jurisdictions. Through his foresight, a movement was born that would unite distinguished Scottish Rite leaders in service to the Rite and their communities.

 

Expansion in the Northern Jurisdiction

 

Within the Northern Jurisdiction, the development of the Commanders of the Rite occurred gradually. While some Orients embraced the concept early, others implemented it only partially. A significant turning point occurred in 1982 during the administration of S.G.I.G. Dr. Russell S. Gideon, 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander of the United Supreme Council, Northern Jurisdiction.

 

In May 1982, Illustrious Grand Minister of State S.G.I.G. B. Albert Ford, 33°, recognizing the value of a unified body of experienced Scottish Rite leaders throughout the Jurisdiction, advocated for the universal adoption of the Commanders of the Rite concept. His recommendation encouraged every Orient within the Northern Jurisdiction to establish its own Commanders of the Rite organization.

 

This initiative proved to be a pivotal moment in the growth of the movement. Under the leadership of Sovereign Grand Commander Dr. Gideon and through the advocacy of Grand Minister of State Ford, the Commanders of the Rite became firmly established throughout the Northern Jurisdiction. As a result, Commanders of the Rite organizations emerged across numerous Orients, creating a network of Scottish Rite leaders dedicated to supporting their Councils of Deliberation, strengthening Consistories, mentoring Sublime Princes, promoting Masonic education, and advancing charitable and community-service initiatives.

 

Historical records confirm that state-level Commanders of the Rite bodies were being organized during the early 1980s. One of the earliest documented examples is the Ohio Commanders of the Rite, which was formally organized in October 1983 under the leadership of S.G.I.G. Samuel Brogdon, Jr., 33°, Deputy for the Orient of Ohio and a member of Bezaleel Consistory No. 15, Valley of Cleveland. This documented formation confirms that the movement was actively expanding throughout the Jurisdiction during this period.

Formation of the New Jersey Commanders of the Rite

 

The exact date of the organization of the New Jersey Commanders of the Rite has not yet been conclusively documented in publicly available records. However, the NJCOTR was likely organized during the early-to-mid 1980s as part of the expansion of the Commanders of the Rite movement throughout the Prince Hall Scottish Rite Northern Jurisdiction following the call for universal adoption.

 

As the organization developed, it became a vital component of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation, providing a forum through which distinguished Scottish Rite leaders could support the Rite, mentor future leaders, promote Masonic education, encourage charitable endeavors, and strengthen fellowship among the Fraters throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

 

Since its establishment, the NJCOTR has remained steadfast in its commitment to leadership, fellowship, education, and service, embodying the vision first articulated by Sovereign Grand Commander John G. Lewis, Jr., 33°, and carried forward by generations of New Jersey Scottish Rite leaders.

During the administration of S.G.I.G. Ulysses D. Baker, 33°, and under the leadership of S.G.I.G. Herbert M. Douglas, 33°, Deputy for the Orient of New Jersey, the New Jersey Commanders of the Rite continued its growth as a visible and active partner of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation. This administration placed particular emphasis on strengthening the spiritual, ceremonial, and fraternal traditions of Scottish Rite Masonry throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

 

Highlights of the Administration:

 

• Established the annual observance of WHIT Sunday as a statewide Scottish Rite worship service and fellowship event. Observed each September, WHIT Sunday became a meaningful opportunity for Scottish Rite Masons and their families to gather in worship and celebrate the spiritual principles of the Rite.

• Designed and introduced the distinctive Black and Blue Velvet Ceremonial Robe, featuring the Double-Headed Eagle with Wings Up and the traditional Black Flap Emblem. The robe was adopted as ceremonial attire for Illustrious Sirs attending Official Visitations with the Illustrious Deputy and sessions of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation.

• Enhanced cooperation and visibility between the NJCOD and the NJCOTR through increased participation in statewide events and ceremonial functions.

• Promoted unity, fellowship, and active engagement among Scottish Rite leaders throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

The Baker administration left a lasting imprint upon the NJCOTR and the New Jersey Council of Deliberation. The establishment of WHIT Sunday and the adoption of the ceremonial robe became enduring traditions that continue to symbolize the dignity, unity, fellowship, and spiritual commitment of New Jersey Scottish Rite Masonry.

During the administration of S.G.I.G. James G. Allen, 33°, and under the leadership of S.G.I.G. Arthur R. Crawford, 33°, Deputy for the Orient of New Jersey, the New Jersey Commanders of the Rite experienced a period of organizational growth, enhanced governance, and expanded charitable outreach. The Allen administration focused on strengthening the NJCOTR’s role within the New Jersey Council of Deliberation while establishing programs and traditions that would have a lasting impact throughout the Orient.

 

Highlights of the Administration:

 

• Established the annual NJCOTR Church Visitation Program, observed each year during the month of May. This initiative strengthened the spiritual connection between Scottish Rite Masonry and faith communities throughout the Orient while promoting fellowship among the Brethren and their families.

• Designed and introduced the distinctive Black Robe with Deep Cranberry Velvet Front, adorned with the Patriarchal Cross (Cross with Double Crosslets) and the traditional Black Flap Emblem. The robe became ceremonial attire for Sovereign Grand Inspectors General during Official Visitations with the Illustrious Deputy and at sessions of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation.

• Developed the Orient-Wide NJCOTR Scholarship Award Program, supported by the six Valley Commanders of the Rite bodies throughout the Orient of New Jersey. This initiative furthered the educational mission of the NJCOD and NJCOTR by providing scholarship assistance and academic opportunities to deserving students throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

• Established the S.G.I.G. Herbert M. Douglas, 33° Scholarship Award, further honoring the legacy of a distinguished New Jersey Scottish Rite leader while expanding scholarship opportunities for students pursuing higher education.

• Moved the annual NJCOTR Breakfast Meeting, traditionally held on Saturday during the Annual Session of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation, to a Friday Evening Meeting, creating a more effective forum for planning, communication, and preparation prior to the opening of the Annual Session.

• Led the comprehensive revision of the NJCOTR By-Laws in 2010, strengthening the governance structure of the organization and providing enhanced guidance for future administrations.

The Allen administration significantly advanced the organizational structure, educational mission, and charitable impact of the NJCOTR. Many of the programs and traditions established during his tenure continue to serve the Scottish Rite throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

The administration of G.I.G. Jeffrey M. Perry, 33°, under the leadership and vision of S.G.I.G. Robert L. Oglesby, Sr., 33°, Deputy for the Orient of New Jersey, ushered in a period of enhanced communication, increased visibility, and strengthened organizational identity for the New Jersey Commanders of the Rite. This administration focused on promoting Scottish Rite education, highlighting the accomplishments of the Brethren, strengthening fraternal bonds throughout the Orient, and advancing initiatives that supported the mission of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation.

Highlights of the Administration:

 

• Creation and implementation of the NJCOD 32° and 33° Lapel Pin Fundraiser, promoting unity, pride, and identification among Scottish Rite Masons throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

• Developed and introduced an exclusive 33° NJCOTR Polo Shirt Fundraiser Logo, unique to the Orient of New Jersey, symbolizing the unity, fellowship, and collective commitment of the Sovereign Grand Inspectors General and Grand Inspectors General. The fundraiser strengthened fraternal bonds among the Illustrious Sirs while generating financial support for the charitable and educational programs sponsored by the NJCOD and NJCOTR.

• Development and publication of the NJCOTR Newsletter, providing a platform for education, leadership development, historical awareness, announcements, and recognition of Scottish Rite and Masonic achievements throughout the Orient.

• Authored and developed the framework for the S.G.I.G. Darrow E. Hill, 33° Distinguished Service Award (DSA), including the design of the DSA Medal and accompanying Certificates of Recognition, as well as the eligibility requirements, recipient qualifications, nomination criteria, and application process. The award was established to formally recognize Fraters who have rendered exceptionally meritorious, distinguished, and outstanding service to the New Jersey Council of Deliberation while honoring exemplary dedication, leadership, and commitment to the advancement of Prince Hall Scottish Rite Masonry throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

• Increased communication and engagement among members statewide.

• Continued support of NJCOD programs, educational initiatives, and charitable activities.

These efforts strengthened the NJCOTR’s identity, enhanced communication throughout the Orient, increased awareness of Scottish Rite accomplishments, and established enduring programs recognizing distinguished service and commitment to the principles of Prince Hall Scottish Rite Masonry.

The Perry administration enhanced communication, visibility, and organizational identity within the NJCOTR through innovative programs, educational initiatives, and increased member engagement. These efforts strengthened unity, fellowship, and support for the mission of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation throughout the Orient of New Jersey.

During this period, the NJCOTR experienced significant growth in charitable outreach, fraternal fellowship, community engagement, and fundraising success, further strengthening its role as a valued partner of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation and the Prince Hall Masonic Family.

 

Highlights of the Administration:

 

• Establishment of the inaugural NJCOTR Summer Jazz Dinner Fundraiser.

• Expansion of the Summer Jazz Dinner into a signature NJCOTR event.

• Increased support for scholarship and charitable initiatives.

• Strengthened fellowship among Scottish Rite Masons and community partners through a collaborative relationship with The Open Door of New Jersey.

• Enhanced community awareness of the charitable missions of both organizations through successful fundraising and outreach efforts.

• Provided annual financial support to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New Jersey HBCU College Tour Program through a $1,000 annual contribution from Summer Jazz Dinner proceeds.

• Provided annual financial support to the New Jersey Grand Assembly, Order of the Golden Circle through a $1,000 annual contribution supporting its charitable and educational programs.

The Summer Jazz Dinner Series generated more than $42,000 in support of scholarships, charitable programs, educational opportunities, and community-service initiatives.

From its origins in the vision of Sovereign Grand Commander John G. Lewis, Jr., 33°, through its expansion in the Northern Jurisdiction under Sovereign Grand Commander Dr. Russell S. Gideon, 33°, and Grand Minister of State B. Albert Ford, 33°, to its continued growth under the leadership of dedicated Presidents in New Jersey, the NJCOTR remains committed to strengthening the Scottish Rite and supporting the mission and objectives of the New Jersey Council of Deliberation.

 

Through leadership, fellowship, education, mentorship, and service, the New Jersey Commanders of the Rite continues to carry forward a proud legacy while preparing future generations of Scottish Rite leaders to advance the principles and ideals of Prince Hall Scottish Rite Masonry.
